SUBCOSTALIS

Subcostalis is a thoracic wall muscle. They arise from and are attached to the ribs.

Origin

Each intercostal muscle originates from 1st rib.

Insertion

Each intercostal muscle inserts into the 2nd or 3rd rib below its origin.

Blood supply

Superior intercostal artery, posterior intercostal arteries.

Nerve supply

Intercostal nerves.

Action

Subcostalis causes depression of the lower ribs. Hence this muscle is used in the process of respiration.

Muscle Exercise  

Parighasana yoga stretch, back bend, and performance breathing can help in increasing the strength of the subcostalis muscles.

Interesting facts

Whenever you feel sharp, stabbing pains while breathing, you have subcostalis muscle strain.
