SUPERIOR OBLIQUE

The superior oblique is located on the upper part of the orbit of the eyes (near the nose).

Origin

Sphenoid bone

Insertion

Posterior sclera – superolateral surface

Blood supply

Ophthalmic artery

Nerve supply

Trochlear nerve

Action

The muscle moves the eye towards and away from the nose and also helps in depression of eyes (eyes looking downwards towards mouth).

Disease/Injury

Any injury or trauma to head can cause paralysis of superior oblique muscle. In this palsy, usually the patient experiences double vision.

Muscle Exercise

Do the alternate near and far exercise for double vision. Hold a pen in front of nose about 15 cm away. Focus on the object for 5 seconds continuously and then look far away at 20 feet to an object for 5 seconds. Now, look back to the object near nose. Repeat the process 20 times at least twice a day.
