SUPERIOR RECTUS

Superior rectus is one of the extraocular muscles; it is located in the cavity of the eye.

Origin

Common tendinous ring.

Insertion

Anterior part of the sclera – superior surface.

Blood supply

Supraorbital artery.

Nerve supply

Occulomotor nerve.

Action

The main function is to move the eye upward; it helps to rotate the top of the eye towards the nose.

Disease/Injury

Injury to the face or head can cause superior rectus muscle palsy in which the patient develops diplopia.

Muscle Exercise

Eye circle exercise is moving the eyes in circles. First, move the eyes to one side, then move the eyes to the other side and then rotate them slowly in clockwise and anticlockwise direction.

Interesting facts

Due to the movement of this muscle, the eyes express the unspoken emotions.
