Temporalis is a fan-shaped muscle that overlies the temples (the sides of the head and behind the eyes). It is one of the important muscles of mastication.

Origin

Temporal fossa, temporal fascia.

Insertion

Mandible

Blood supply

Deep temporal arteries.

Nerve supply

Trigeminal nerve, deep temporal nerves.

Action

The main action involves movement of jaw while eating, talking, and yawning.

Disease/Injury

Migraine headaches are felt in the temporalis muscle area.

Interesting facts

The muscle can be felt when you place your fingers over the temple while clenching and unclenching the jaw, for e.g., when you are angry.
