TENSOR FASCIA LATAE

Tensor fascia latae is a muscle of the thigh and it stretches on the side of the thigh.

Origin

Iliac crest.

Insertion

Iliotibial tract.

Blood supply

Superior gluteal artery, primary lateral circumflex femoral artery.

Nerve supply

Superior gluteal nerve.

Action

Tensor fascia latae helps in flexion and abduction of the hip.

Disease/Injury

If tensor fascia latae muscle becomes tight or shortens, it leads to pain in buttocks, lower back, and side of the knees.

Muscle Exercise

Tensor fascia latae muscle stretches: Stand straight with hands on the hips and cross your right leg in front of left leg. Without moving the upper body, bend the hip towards the right in order to stretch the left hip. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat 3 times. Now repeat the same stretch on the other side.
