TENSOR TYMPANI

The tensor tympani is a muscle located in the middle ear. It is one of the two muscles found in the tympanic cavity.

Origin

The sphenoid bone and the pharyngotympanic tube.

Insertion

Malleus

Blood supply

The superior tympanic artery.

Nerve supply

Trigeminal nerve.

Action

The tensor tympani helps to reduce certain sounds like the ones made by the act of chewing.

Disease/Injury

Tensor tympani myoclonus is a disease condition in which you may have the sensation of butterflies in the ear.

Hyperacusis is another condition in which the patient is not able to tolerate sound in a normal manner.
