TENSOR VELI PALATINI

The tensor veli palatini is a ribbon-shaped muscle located in the head.

Origin

Sphenoid bone

Insertion

Palatine bone and palatine aponeurosis.

Blood supply

Middle meningeal artery and accessory meningeal artery.

Nerve supply

Trigeminal nerve

Action

It prevents entry of food into the nasopharynx during swallowing. It also helps in the closing of the eustachian tubes.

Disease/Injury

Spasm of the tensor veli palatini closes off the eustachian tube and produces middle ear problems such as ear pain, changes in hearing, and perceived sounds in the ear.
