TERES MAJOR

The teres major is an important shoulder muscle.

Origin

Scapula – inferior angle.

Insertion

Humerus – intertubercular sulcus.

Blood supply

Subscapular artery, circumflex scapular artery.

Nerve supply

Lower subscapular nerve.

Action

This muscle helps to abduct the arm inwards and to extend it behind the waist.

Disease/Injury

Excessive playing of sports or driving of heavy vehicles can cause a strain on the teres major.

Muscle Exercise

Pull-ups, shoulder rotations, and bent-over rowing help to strengthen the teres major.

Interesting fact

This is the muscle you use while tucking in your shirt into your pants.
