TIBIALIS POSTERIOR

Tibialis posterior muscle is located in the midline in the posterior aspect of the lower leg.

Origin

Tibia, fibula.

Insertion

Medial cuneiform and navicular bones.

Blood supply

Posterior tibial artery.

Nerve supply

Tibial nerve.

Action

It helps to move the foot in the inward direction (adduction) and also helps to bend the foot in downward direction (extension).

Disease/Injury

If this muscle does not work properly it may cause flat foot in adults. Football players are at more risk of getting their tibialis posterior injured due to direct blow to the muscle.

Muscle Exercise

To strengthen the tibialis posterior muscle, you can do inner ankle lift, ankle flexion, ankle circles, heel raise, or calf raise exercises.

Interesting facts

Insoles help to reduce the strain on the tibialis posterior muscle.
