TRANSVERSOSPINALIS ROTATORES

Transversospinalis rotatores are the small quadrilateral shaped muscles located on the vertebrae below transversospinalis multifidus muscle. These are mostly located in the thoracic region. These are 12 pairs located on each side of spine.

Origin

Transverse processes of cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae.

Insertion

Spinous processes of cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae.

Blood supply

Vertebral artery, occipital artery, posterior intercostal arteries, lumbar arteries.

Nerve supply

Spinal nerves.

Action

It helps to rotate the spine, i.e., the backbone.

Disease/Injury

Sudden bending, twisting, lifting heavy objects or sitting in poor posture for whole day can easily injure this muscle in the back.

Muscle Exercise

To strengthen this muscle, you can practice lower back stretches. Lie on the back with bent knees. Pull the knees towards your chest with your hips being slightly raised.
