TRICEPS SURAE

Triceps surae is a pair of muscles consisting of soleus and gastrocnemius muscles. It is located in the calf of the leg.

Origin

Femur, tibia.

Insertion

Calcaneus, Achilles tendon.

Blood supply

Posterior tibial artery.

Nerve supply

Tibial nerve.

Action

It stabilizes body during walking, running, and power jumping. It also helps to bend the foot and helps in stabilization of ankle.

Disease/Injury

There can be tears in the triceps surae muscle due to sports injuries.

Muscle Exercise

To strengthen your triceps surae muscle, you can practice ‘alternating heel lift.’ It is a simple exercise to increase the blood flow to the muscle. Use the stomach muscles when you lift the right foot and put the weight on left foot, then return to starting position and repeat the same for the left foot alternately.

Interesting facts

Doing warm-up exercise before heavy sports like somersaults prevents the person from getting injured by tear of calf muscles.
