VASTUS LATERALIS

Vastus lateralis is the muscle of thigh and is one of the four quadriceps muscle. It is located on the outer side of the thigh.

Origin

Femur – greater trochanter, intertrochanteric line.

Insertion

Combines with the vastus lateralis/medialis/intermedius muscles to form the quadriceps tendon that inserts into the base of the patella.

Blood supply

Lateral circumflex femoral artery.

Nerve supply

Femoral nerve.

Action

It helps to straighten knee joint and extend the leg.

Disease/Injury

Excessive kicking, jumping, sprinting, and hopping puts pressure on the muscle and causes muscle strain due to which there is excessive sharp pain in the thigh at the time of injury.

Muscle Exercise

Abduction exercise: Stand with feet apart, then slowly raise one foot from the ground and move it to the outer side. Hold this for a few seconds and then come to the starting position again. Repeat it 10 times with each leg.
