VASTUS MEDIALIS

VASTUS MEDIALIS

Vastus medialis is a muscle of the thigh and is one of the four quadriceps muscle. It is located on the inner part and front side of the thigh.

Origin

Femur

Insertion

Combines with the vastus lateralis/medialis/intermedius muscles to form the quadriceps tendon that inserts into the base of the patella.

Blood supply

Femoral artery.

Nerve supply

Femoral nerve.

Action

It helps to extend the leg at the knee to a straightened position.

Disease/Injury

If the vastus medialis becomes weak, the kneecap moves abnormally and is even positioned abnormally due to which the kneecap becomes chronically unstable. This causes pain in the leg while extending it more than 20 to 30 degrees.

Muscle Exercise

Exercises like leg extensions, leg press, lunges, and step-ups help to strengthen vastus medialis muscle.
