Origin
Femur
Insertion
Combines with the vastus lateralis/medialis/intermedius muscles to form the quadriceps tendon that inserts into the base of the patella.
Blood supply
Femoral artery.
Nerve supply
Femoral nerve.
Action
It helps to extend the leg at the knee to a straightened position.
Disease/Injury
If the vastus medialis becomes weak, the kneecap moves abnormally and is even positioned abnormally due to which the kneecap becomes chronically unstable. This causes pain in the leg while extending it more than 20 to 30 degrees.
Muscle Exercise
Exercises like leg extensions, leg press, lunges, and step-ups help to strengthen vastus medialis muscle.
Interesting facts
Wear knee brace to prevent knee injury while playing sports.
