ADAM’S APPLE

This is seen in boys after puberty. You may see a big bump moving up and down in front of the neck while drinking water. When puberty starts a lot of things change. Your voice box means larynx which is present in the throat, when it grows larger in puberty, it sticks out in front of the throat with the thyroid cartilage surrounding it. This is called as Adam’s apple. Everyone's larynx grows during puberty, but a girl’s larynx does not grow as much as boys do.

Adam’s apple provides protection for the larynx. It makes the male voice more deepen after puberty.

Diseases:

There are very few disease conditions that affect Adam’s apple. Sometimes inflamed thyroid gland may misinterpret as Adam’s apple inflammation an abnormally enlarged Adam’s apple.

Interesting Facts:

The history behind the name Adam’s apple is very interesting. It is related with Adam and eve. Eve gave Adam a forbidden fruit, which is commonly misrepresented as an apple. The term then basically comes from the legend that when he ate a piece of an apple, the piece got stuck in his throat and made a lump so the organ which we have explained to you presents the same and so the name is Adam’s apple.
