ADENOIDS

ADENOIDS

Adenoids are masses of soft tissue or lymphatic tissue situated behind the nasal cavity. Adenoids are a part of the immune system and are made up of the same type of lymphoid tissue.

Functions:

Adenoids help to prevent infections in surrounding tissues.

Diseases:

Adenoiditis means inflammation of adenoids; the infection may be bacterial or viral. Sometimes infection does not get clear completely and may cause enlarged adenoid, leading to obstructive sleep apnea (during sleep it causes the person to stop breathing for few seconds due to blockage).

Interesting Facts:

In children, the immune system depends on the adenoid glands, so adenoidectomy (removal of adenoids due to problem) should not be done before the age of six.
