FALLOPIAN TUBES

The fallopian tubes are tubes attaching the ovaries to the uterus (the womb). Fallopian tubes are also called as oviduct or uterine tube. It is present in women and is very important for fertilization. They measure about 8 to 10cm in length. The fallopian tubes ends in ovaries, this place is called as fimbria, which is Latin word for fingers. There are millions of tiny hairs like structure cilia which lines the fimbria and inside of the fallopian tubes.

Functions:

It helps to transport the male sperm cells to the egg in the fallopian tube and provides a suitable environment for fertilization, and also transport the egg from the ovary, where it is produced, to the uterus. Fimbrial end of the tube captures the egg and draw it in the fallopian tube. Muscular contractions of the tube and inner cilia move the embryo (the fertilized sperm and egg) towards the uterus. Implantation usually occurs one week after the ovum the female egg gets released.

Diseases:

The blockage of the fallopian tubes is the major cause of infertility. Ectopic pregnancy in this fertilization takes place in the fallopian tubes itself, which leads to tubal abortion, which is the most common type of miscarriage.

Interesting Facts:

The fallopian tubes are tied, clamped, sealed or blocked called as Tubal ligation or Tubectomy, to prevent pregnancy and sterilze the women.
