Hair is a simple filament like structure made up of tough protein keratin. The part of the hair beneath the skin is called the hair follicle or when pulled from the skin called the bulb. Each strand of hair is made of medulla, cortex and cuticle. In which the cortex contains melanin which colours the fibres. All natural hair colours are the result of two types of hair pigment which makes colour of your hair brown hair or black hair.

Functions:

Hair provides defensive functions as they act in a protective way, and helps for the proper functioning of sense organs like eyes, nose. Eyebrows provide some protection to eyes from dirt, sweat and rain. Also play a role in non-verbal communication. Eye lashes grow at the edges of eyelid and protects eye from dirt.   Hair naturally helps you to keep you and your head warm and it serves as the primary source of heat insulation and cooling as well as protection from ultraviolet radiation exposure. Hair can sense movements of air as well as touch by the physical objects and are especially sensitive to presence of insects.

Diseases:

Hypertrichosis is an abnormal amount of hair growth on the body. This is of two types; one involves entire body and one which involves restricted area known as localized. It can be congenital or acquired later in the life.

Interesting Facts:

Human head contains around 150,000 hairs. Women’s hair is about half the diameter of Men’s hair. The fastest growing tissue in human body is hair. Eyebrow hair lasts between 3-5 months before it shades. Every day average human loses 60-100 strands of hairs. Facial hair grows faster than any other hair on the body.  Human hair is virtually indestructible, human hair decays at such a slow rate that is practically non-disintegrative.
