The tempting smell of cookies coming from the oven, a nice romantic smell of fresh flower, a dirty smell of socks! How do you smell these smells and thousands more? It's your nose. Nose is a protruding part of the face. It has two holes called nostrils. The nostrils and the nasal passages are separated by a wall called septum. It is made up of cartilage. Behind your nose there is a space called nasal cavity which is connected to the back of the nose. The medical term for sense of smell is "olfaction".

Functions:

Your nose makes you able to smell. It is the main gate to the respiratory system, it is very important for breathing. When you inhale air from nostrils, it passes away from nasal passages to the nasal cavity and to the trachea and then to the lungs. And along with this nose is the only outlet, when you exhale air from your lungs. The nose also warms, moistens, and filters the air before it goes to lungs. It also helps in recognize the taste of food, yummy! It also acts as appetizer with the smell of food.

Diseases:

Diseases of nose are really very common,  with every season change one of ten of you has suffered from the nose disease known as rhinitis, simple cold, allergic rhinitis are common complaints seen in many people. Sinusitis is also has effect on nose as nose block is common complaint of sinusitis. Nasal polyp, deviated nasal septum these are also nasal diseases.

Interesting Facts:

On average, men have larger noses than women. Women generally have stronger senses of smell than male. Everyone has a unique smell print; no two people smell things the same way. Men can smell when women are ovulating.  Humans have 350 functional olfactory receptors genes.
