Functions:
Ovaries produce hormones oestrogen and progesterone. Oestrogen is responsible for secondary sex characteristics in female. These hormones control the development of female body characteristics such as breasts, body shape and body hair. Ovaries release egg each month for possible fertilization. The primary function of the ovaries is to nurture and prepare oocyte means eggs for the process of ovulation. Once the egg is released it goes down from the fallopian tube to the uterus, if an egg is fertilized it is implanted on the wall of the uterus. The process of ovulation and fertilization are controlled by cells of ovary.
Diseases:
The disorders of ovaries are now a day’s very common. Ovarian cysts are the fluid filled sacs similar to blisters; polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common hormonal disorder. Ovarian cancer is silent killer because many times it has no symptoms till the disease has reach to the advance state.
Interesting Facts:
During ovulation, the number of white blood cells in the cervical mucus drops dramatically. If it did not, the white blood cells would destroy all foreign bodies including sperm.
