PARATHYROID GLAND

The parathyroid glands are small endocrine glands in the neck that produce parathyroid hormone. Humans usually have 4parathyroid glands, which are usually located on the near surface of thyroid gland or within the thyroid gland itself or in the chest.

Functions:

The main function of parathyroid gland is to control calcium within the blood; it has no effect on metabolism. Calcium is the element that allows the normal conduction of electric current along nerves, its how our nervous system works and how one nerve talks to next. Our entire brain works on calcium element into and out of the nerve cell. Calcium is also the primary element which causes muscles to contract.

Diseases:

The disease condition which may be fatal because of dysfunction of parathyroid hormone is known as hyperthyroidism. It is a destructive disease which causes high blood calcium which leads to serious health problems.

Interesting Facts:

Parathyroid disease does not always correlate with the level of calcium. With slight increase in the parathyroid hormone and calcium level also you can suffer with severe osteoporosis.
