PLEURA

The pleura is a thin, glistening, serous membrane, the pleura lines the thoracic wall and diaphragm, where it is called the parietal pleura, it is reflected onto the lungs where it is known as visceral pleura. The visceral pleura covers the whole lung along with fissures.

Functions:

The primary function of the pleura is to separate the two lungs in the human body. It helps to keep two lungs away from each other through it remains air-tight. If one lung is punctured or collapsed due to an accident still the other pleural cavity still remains air-tight. It acts as a cushion for the lungs and allows smooth movements of the lungs. It secretes pleural fluid that lubricates the lungs while functioning which prevents friction; it covers and protects lung tissue. It acts as a shock absorber and prevents the lungs from getting any direct injury.

Diseases:

Diseases of pleura are inflammation of the pleura is known as pleuritis. The excess fluid that accumulates in the two pleural layers is known as pleural effusion.

Interesting Facts:

The pleural cavity is further separated into the left and right sides by the heart and pericardial cavity.
