SPLEEN

The spleen is an organ of your lymphatic system. The spleen is situated in the upper left part of the abdomen, to the left of the stomach. It is approximately 4 inches long, it may vary in size and shape. Spleen is protected by the rib cage so normally you cannot feel it but when it is abnormally enlarged you can feel it.

Functions:

Spleen helps to perform many functions in the body. It participates in the creation of blood cells and also helps to filter the blood and fight infection. It also helps to control the amount of blood which is circulating throughout the body.  It is not the only organ responsible for any of these functions.

Diseases:

Enlarged spleen is known as splenomegaly which is the caused by viral mononucleosis, liver disease, blood cancers or other conditions. Injury to spleen may cause rupture of spleen which is the very severe and emergency condition.  Sickle cell disease, this is inherited form of anaemia, abnormal red blood cells block the flow of blood through vessels and leads to organ damage, which causes the damage to spleen also. Thrombocytopenia means low platelet count, an enlarged spleen sometimes stores excessive number of body’s platelets.

Interesting Facts:

It is not an organ without which you cannot live; you can live a healthy life even after removal of the spleen.
