Spleen helps to perform many functions in the body. It participates in the creation of blood cells and also helps to filter the blood and fight infection. It also helps to control the amount of blood which is circulating throughout the body. It is not the only organ responsible for any of these functions.

Sickle cell disease, this is inherited form of anaemia, abnormal red blood cells block the flow of blood through vessels and leads to organ damage, which causes the damage to spleen also. Thrombocytopenia means low platelet count, an enlarged spleen sometimes stores excessive number of body’s platelets.
