THROAT

Throat is the front part of the neck which is situated in front of the vertebral column. It consists of pharynx, larynx and epiglottis. Epiglottis is a flap which separates an oesophagus from trachea and prevents inhalation of food or drink.

Functions:

Functions of throat include the following- It carries food to your oesophagus for digestion. And it carries air to your windpipe.

Diseases:

 Throat problems are common like a sore throat. It may be caused due to usually viral infection, but other causes include allergies, infection with streptococcus bacteria or upward movements of stomach acids in oesophagus known as gastric reflux. Other problems that affect the throat include, tonsillitis means infection of tonsils, and pharyngitis means inflammation of pharynx. Cancers may affect the throat. Most throat problems are minor and go away on their own.

Interesting Facts:

Humans are the only mammals who cannot swallow and breathe at the same time.
