The Pap smear should be done every year in women who are sexually active after 30. Women who do not have any sexual activity can have the Pap smear done yearly after the age of thirty five. Menopausal women and those who have had hysterectomy done (removal of uterus), should have a Pap smear done every year.
The test though a simple one requires a few preparations by the person appearing.
Pre requisites for PAP smear:
- Do not douche. At least for 48 hours before the PAP smear is taken avoid douching or washing the area.
- Avoid use of any vaginal creams for a week prior to taking PAP smear.
- Abstain from sexual activity completely for a day before the Pap smear.
- Make sure that there is no vaginal bleeding, menses, or any other discharge from other sources.
The procedure might be a little uncomfortable but it’s not painful.
