Diabetes is a slow progressing disease. It develops gradually and encroaches into all parts of your body, the skin included. High blood glucose levels leads to water depletion from the body causing dry, itchy, cracked skin. Hence keeping the skin moisturized is very essential.

Here are a few guidelines for skincare in diabetics:

  1. Pat yourself completely dry after the bath. Apply a good moisturizer that will keep your skin soft through the day.
  2. Avoid hot showers, as they make your skin even drier.
  3. Do not soak feet in very hot water. It will make your skin soft and easily prone to injury. One needs to be doubly careful here as diabetic neuropathy numbs the sensations.
  4. Treat cuts, bruises and wounds instantly. If left uncared for, it may lead to sepsis or amputation too.
  5. Eat food rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like fish, fish liver oils, soybeans, etc. Omega-3 fatty acid keeps the skin moist and hydrated.
  6. Keep the blood sugar level under control.
  7. Ask the physician to check your feet too, every time you go for your check-up.
  8. Wear loose fitting cotton clothes. It is important to let your skin breathe.
  9. Make sure to apply sun-block creams before you step out into the sun.
  10. Use mild soaps
  11. Stay clear of coffee, tea and aerated drinks as they zap your body of water and leave your skin dry.

Taking extra care of skin is important for the people suffering from diabetes. Diabetics are more prone to skin ailments, what is worse is the diminished sensitivity of nerves and reduced circulation makes it difficult to spot and treat the skin problems early.
