If excessive vomiting of pregnancy is not treated adequately,\u00a0it can lead to complications like renal failure,\u00a0coagulopathy,\u00a0atrophy, Mallory-Weiss syndrome,\u00a0hypoglycemia,\u00a0jaundice,\u00a0malnutrition and Wernicke’s encephalopathy among others to the mother.<\/p>\n

Hyperemesis gravidarum is the term used to describe excessive vomiting in pregnant women.<\/p>\n

Although the exact cause of excessive vomiting is unknown,\u00a0some theories attribute it to hormonal changes in pregnancy.<\/p>\n

Excessive vomiting may result in:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Loss of weight.<\/li>\n
  2. Dehydration.<\/li>\n
  3. Deficiency of nutrients.<\/li>\n
  4. Problem carrying out daily activities.<\/li>\n
  5. Physical and emotional stress of pregnancy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Complications of excessive vomiting:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Apart from the complications listed above,\u00a0it may also lead to birth defects and can increase risk of chronic diseases like diabetes or heart disease later.<\/p>\n

    How is it diagnosed?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Unnatural weight loss despite efforts to eat,\u00a0persistent nausea and vomiting onsets in the first or second month of pregnancy and if not helped by normal measures support diagnosis.<\/p>\n

    How is it treated?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Due to risk of severe dehydration and other complications,\u00a0excess vomiting is a medical emergency. Antiemetic medications and rehydration along with nutritional supplements is the treatment of choice.<\/p>\n

    Some suggestions:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    1. Eat a bland diet.<\/li>\n
    2. Eat as soon as you wake up.<\/li>\n
    3. Use ginger to alleviate nausea.<\/li>\n
