Premature ageing in youngsters

Arvind and Aarti are a couple of today’s world. Extremely conscious of their looks, they never miss a salon appointment. Arvind regularly uses expensive hair color to cover his greys, while Aarti never forgets to apply her anti-wrinkle cream. Arvind is 32 while Aarti is 29! Sounds shocking? Maybe not. You may be doing the same things yourself.

Grey hair and wrinkles were something that symbolized old age. However, today young men and women in their late twenties and thirties are the huge market for these ‘anti-ageing’ products!

Why is this the case? Why are so many youngsters today looking and feeling prematurely old?

Earlier, people who went prematurely bald or showed grey hair had a strong genetic predisposition for it. Today, the changes are more attributable to the lifestyle we lead!

Tremendous stress levels, sedentary lifestyle, and improper eating habits lead to diseases like malnutrition, pernicious anemia, and deficiency disorders.

These take a toll on the skin and hair and lead to early graying and early appearance of wrinkles.

Add to these vices like alcohol consumption and tobacco smoking/chewing, and you have the perfect recipe for a health disaster!

Grey hair and wrinkles are the visible changes of old age. There are several damages that happen to the body internally too. The stress-filled sedentary lifestyle takes a toll on the overall health. Lack of sleep makes the body weak and tired. We find ourselves unable to perform to the best of our capacity. Losing attention soon, inability to concentrate, always feeling drowsy, and a constant feeling of tiredness are the changes that we observe within ourselves. This is not very different from what an old man or woman would feel!

How does one control this?

The first thing to do is to stop abusing our body and to start respecting it! We need to understand our body’s limits and capacities. Bear in mind not to overstretch it.

Eat well and sleep well. Eating well does not mean that you eat junk food all the time. Opt for a balanced and wholesome diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables. Antioxidant-rich foods help your body to fight off the free radicals that cause ageing.

Exercise regularly. Your body requires some fresh air and a boost too and exercise is how you can provide your body with it. It does not mean that you force yourself to go to a gym to sweat it out. A simple walk for 30 minutes can also do wonders for your body.

Take time out to relax. Plan a vacation or a short trip once in a while and recharge your batteries.

Pamper your body regularly at a spa. A good massage can help you feel fresh and rejuvenated with a new vigor to face the challenges of the week ahead!

Take good care of your body; if not, your body will show the world what you do to it!
