MMR vaccine is an injection given to small kids. It helps protect the child against Measles, Mumps, and Rubella. The individual vaccines for the three diseases were combined to form a single MMR vaccine in 1971.

Lately an added protection for chicken pox is introduced in the form of MMRV vaccine that gives protection against the Varicella Zoster virus too.

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection. The symptoms include fever, runny nose, cough, and eye irritation. Complications of measles include ear infections, diarrhea, pneumonia, seizures, encephalitis, brain damage, and death.

Mumps is a viral infection that typically causes swelling under the jaw that is extremely painful along with fever. It causes complications that include severe ear infection, meningitis, encephalitis, and deafness. It can also cause damages to the ovaries. Men who develop mumps after puberty have a high chance of developing orchitis.

Rubella or German Measles starts as a pink rash on the face that spreads to other areas. Fever and swollen lymph nodes follow. Rubella generally stays for about 3 days. If a pregnant lady gets rubella, it can result in severe birth defects and even miscarriage.
